Juan Pablo Echeverri (1978-2022). Por medio de fotografías y videos, su extensa obra artística evolucionó de autorretratos diarios, que comenzó a tomarse cuando era un adolescente, hacia la exploración de cómo ‘las demás personas’ se construyen a sí mismas y cómo la mirada de otros los construye. Le interesaba la forma en que los estereotipos se fusionan alrededor de personas únicas, y experimentaba continuamente con su propia apariencia, rechazando una interpretación simplista y escencialista de la identidad; su obra desvirtúa las fantasías del yo, oscilando entre los puntos de vista de un ícono y un súper admirador.
Los viajes internacionales a lo largo de su carrera le llevaron a otro ritual: realizaba una obra de video en cada lugar que visitaba, y generalmente la filmaba y editaba en un solo día. Estas piezas, que a menudo involucraban al artista sincronizando los labios con la canción más popular en ese momento y lugar, eran utilizadas como postales para enviar, y se convertían en recuerdos para atesorar, convirtiendo el ego de artista internacional, en el de un turista.

Juan Pablo Echeverri (1978-2022). Through his extensive artistic work, which spanned photographs and videos, he evolved from daily self-portraits that he began taking as a teenager to exploring how "other people" construct themselves and how the gaze of others constructs them. He was interested in how stereotypes converge around unique individuals, and he continually experimented with his own appearance, rejecting a simplistic and essentialist interpretation of identity. His work subverts fantasies of the self, oscillating between the perspectives of an icon and a superfan.
International travels throughout his career led to another ritual: he created a video piece in each place he visited, often filming and editing it in just one day. These pieces, which frequently involved the artist synchronizing his lips with the most popular song at that moment and location, were used as postcards to send, becoming cherished mementos. In this way, the ego of an international artist was transformed into that of a tourist.
